How to Get Rid of Mold on the Inside of a Building
Mold, a type of fungus that can grow on food and on the walls of buildings, can be extremely dangerous. Possible symptoms caused by an exposure to mold include immune system suppression, respiratory problems, skin rashes or irritation, and even allergies and toxicity (see Reference 1). There are approximately 100,000 different species of mold known today (see Reference 2). Any mold growth found in a building should be removed immediately and properly to avoid negative repercussions.Things You'll Need
- Drop cloths
- Duct tape
- Old clothing
- Face mask
- Rubber gloves
- Spray bottle
- Bucket
- Dish soap
- 2 rags
Instructions
-
-
1
Seal the affected area properly. Secure drop cloths around all doorways, vents and other openings in the room with duct tape.
-
2
Dress in old clothing you can discard afterward.
-
3
Spray water over the mold to moisten the mold spores, making them easier to remove. Mold spores can become airborne and may get stirred up into the air if you attempt to remove the mold when dry.
-
4
Mix a solution of dish soap and water in a bucket.
-
5
Soak a rag in the dish soap and water solution.
-
6
Wipe the mold off with the rag, always working from top to bottom to ensure all mold spores are removed, in case any happen to fall down while you clean. Continue wetting the rag when it becomes dirty. You may even need to prepare a new soap and water solution if the water becomes too filmy.
-
7
Repeat this as many times as needed, until the mold growth is entirely removed.
-
8
Rinse the area with a separate rag and clean water.
-
9
Dry the area completely.
-
10
Discard your old clothes and protective gear immediately to avoid carrying any mold spores that may have fallen on you during the cleaning.
