Silica Gel Hazards
Silica gel is a common, everyday product familiar to most people. A chemical desiccant, silica gel is used to maintain constant humidity in new merchandise such as jewelery boxes and luggage, where excess moisture could lead to musty odors or, worse, mildew. However, the fact that silica gel packets are somewhat commonplace should not lead us to should treat it like anything less than what it is--a chemical substance with specific potential health hazards.-
Inhalation
-
If inhaled, silica gel can dry out or irritate the mucous membranes, nose and throat; additional effects of inhalation include coughing, wheezing and a sore throat. Avoid these symptoms by taking the proper precautions--handle silica gel in a well-ventilated area or in a fume vent, if the substance is dusty. In case of accidental inhalation, affected persons should leave the area and breathe some fresh air, if possible. Persisting symptoms warrant medical attention. Silica gel sometimes contains a cobalt compound that acts as a usage indicator. Because cobalt is thought to be carcinogenic, silica gel that contains this compound should be handled with extreme caution with regards to inhalation.
Skin Contact
-
Prolonged skin contact with silica gel can cause irritation and dryness on the exposed areas. The simplest way to protect your hands when handling silica gel is to wear gloves; if this is not possible, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after touching the gel.
Ingestion
-
Though accidental ingestion doesn't usually pose a serious threat, always bear in mind that silica gel is a chemical and should not be consumed. In the event that someone swallows silica gel, you can minimize any ill effects by drinking several glasses of water to dilute the gel. Seek medical help as needed or if large amounts were consumed.
Eye Contact
-
Silica gel can cause irritation and pain if it gets into the eyes; wearing safety glasses or goggles protects the eyes from accidental exposure. Flush with water as quickly as possible for 15 minutes and find medical assistance if pain persists.
