How to Store Potassium Sorbate

Potassium sorbate is the potassium salt of sorbic acid. It is used in cosmetics as a fragrance ingredient and preservative, as a mold inhibitor in livestock and crop production, in food production as a preservative and in many other products where molds and other growths need to be inhibited. Although natural potassium sorbate exists, most of it used in products is synthetic. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers potassium sorbate a safe and effective food preservative, though rare cases of adverse reactions have been recorded.

Instructions

    • 1

Store potassium sorbate in a container that can be properly and securely closed. This prevents moisture from entering the container. Potassium sorbate is water-soluble and must remain dry.

    • 2

Place the container in a cool, dry space that avoids bright or excessive light and heat. Excessive light or heat can reduce potassium sorbate's effectiveness over time.

    • 3

Close the storage container securely after each use, and return the container to a cool, dry area.

    • 4

Dispose of unused potassium sorbate as required by local, state and federal guidelines. Review local and state regulations regarding disposal of potassium sorbate as these will vary by location and could differ from federal guidelines.
