Allergies & Ionizing Air Purifiers
Air purifiers have been marketed as a great way to remove allergens such as particulates, bacteria and dust from the air in your home. Ionic air purifiers are popular because they are quiet and do not require expensive filter replacements.-
Ionizers
-
Ionic air cleaners work by utilizing an "ionizer" that charges the particles in the air. According to Air Cleaners Guide, the ionic cleaner makes the unwanted dust and allergens take on a negative charge, and then they are attracted to the positively charged plate inside the cleaner.
Clean Often
-
Ionic cleaners are praised because they do not require filters, nor do you have to replace the plates that trap dirt, dust and other unwanted particulates in your home. Ionic cleaners do need to be cleaned pretty frequently, as the area surrounding them may also accumulate the trapped dust and dirt.
Hazards
-
According to the Los Angeles Times, ionic air purifiers release ozone, which is a potential pollutant. The Consumers Union challenged the Sharper Image, after finding that many ionizing purifiers did a poor job of removing smoke, dust and other pollutants in 2003. Ionic purifiers have still been received as a popular device to have in the home to clean the air.
