Toxicity of Dry Erase Markers
Dry erase markers are legal, but sometimes are inhaled and abused because they contain toxic chemicals that can make people feel intoxicated. It is also possible to become addicted to these chemicals.-
Ingredients
-
The toxicity of dry erase markers depends on the formula of the specific brand. The most dangerous versions contain the solvents xylene or toluene. Alcohol-based markers can be dangerous, but are generally not as toxic as ones made with xylene.
Effects
-
Long-term effects of inhaling dry erase markers, or "huffing," usually are manifested in neurological problems, such as poor memory and slow thinking, as well as damage to the heart lungs, and kidneys. You can also become addicted, according to the National Inhalant Prevention Coalition.
Warning
-
Inhaling the toxic chemicals from dry erase markers may cause "sudden sniffing death syndrome", which can occur when the chemicals in the product cause an irregular heart beat.
