Does Any Type of Mold Attack Human Hair?
Molds, also known as fungi, are microorganisms that generally have threadlike bodies called mycelium and reproduce by producing spores. Fungal infections that attack the hair and scalp are called ringworms. These microorganisms "become parasites that attack the outer layer of skin on the scalp and invade the hair shaft, causing it to break," according to the Mayo Clinic Ringworm website.-
Ringworm Attack Cause
-
A ringworm fungal attack upon the hair and scalp is caused in several ways. If a person uses a brush, comb, stuffed toy, or barrette an infected person has used, the infection can be transmitted. Even if you were to sleep in the bed of a person who is infected, the mold can be transmitted by the bed linen, suggests the website Skin Treat.
Infection Result
-
A Ringworm fungal infection can result in the appearance of fungal rashes upon the scalp. The rash can become reddish and result in scaly patches. If left untreated, the infection can cause hair loss and permanent patches of baldness.
Cures
-
A ringworm infection can be treated by using either oral anti-fungal medication or a topical medication. Topical medication is not as effective as oral medication, because it is unable to easily penetrate the scalp and hair. Two recommended oral medications are, "Griseofulvin (Grifulvin V, Gris-Peg), which is taken by mouth as a liquid or tablet or Terbinafine hydrochloride (Lamisil), an oral granule medication that can be sprinkled on food," according to the Mayo Clinic Treatment and Drugs website.
