Uses For a Gas Flow Meter

The flow of the moving gas is measured through the gas flow meters. There are several analyzers and sensors used to detect the quantity of gas flowing in the given area under specific conditions. It is used to measure the temperature, pressure and velocity of the gas. This is usually done with a help of flow sensors which also include detectors, switches, meters and flow controllers. At times, the measurement of gas flow becomes so vital that a wrong assessment may lead to disaster. There are several types of gas flow meters available, such as rotary meters, turbine meters, orifice meters, ultrasonic meters and diaphragm meters.

    • The most common use of the gas flow meters is in residential setups. It is very useful in a central heating system which uses gas to heat the house. Propane is mostly used for this purpose and it is very essential to measure the amount of gas that runs through the gas pipe into the house. The gas flow meter is put on these gas pipes to measure the temperature as well as the quantity of the gas flowing through the pipes. These meters also help the gas companies to ascertain the quantity of gas being consumed.

    Industrial Use

    • Certain gas flow meters have to be used for industrial applications. They are helpful in transferring large volumes of gas by making use of propellers. The kind of gas flow meter used for such application is the rotary gas flow meter in which with each spin or rotation a certain amount of gas is transferred. The meter calculates the volume of gas transferred by the number of shaft rotations. The propellers are attached to the shaft which has a mechanical counting system connected to it. This use of gas flow meter comes in handy in gas pipelines where large volumes of gas transfers take place.

    Welding Machines

    • Another popular use of gas flow meters is in welding machines, where the meter is enclosed in plastic or glass cylinder. A ball float is placed inside the tube and as the gas flows inside the tube, the float rises indicating the amount of gas flowing through the tube to the welding machine. For proper welding, it’s important to maintain the flow rate of the shielding gas which is made easier by using a gas flow meter.

    Laboratories

    • Certain gas flow meters are used in laboratories where experiments are conducted using gas. In laboratories the gas has to be used under certain pressure, temperature, and velocity according to the requirements of the experiments. Under such circumstances the use of gas flow meter becomes indispensable to get accurate results. Laboratory gas flow meters measure low flow rates and low volumes of gases accurately.
