Dangers of Swallowing Silica Gel

Silica gel, according to ASPCA.org, is used to absorb moisture in many products and is commonly packaged in plastic cylinders or paper packets. These packages are seen in medications, leather goods, vitamins and other household and store-bought goods. Although silica gel should not be swallowed, doing so presents few hazards.
  1. Fluid Absorption

    • Silica gel absorbs water, so if you swallow it, you may experience dry eyes, throat irritation, dry nasal cavity and abdominal pain or discomfort, according to Medicmagic.net. To prevent dehydration after swallowing silica gel, consume a large amount of water.

    Respiratory Irritation

    • The common types of clear silica gel are nontoxic. However, according to Medicmagic.net, colored types of silica gel called indicator gels contain cobalt chloride. This chemical is believed to be carcinogenic and may irritate the respiratory system. If this particular type is swallowed, immediately call Poison Control or a hospital.

    Choking

    • According to the West Virginia Poison Center, silica gel is not poisonous to adults, children or pets. The biggest danger in swallowing silica gel is choking on the packet.
