Tools for Marine Mechanics
-
Wrenches
-
Box-end and closed-end metric wrenches are vital to small marine engine work. Because most applications use several sizes of nuts and bolts, mechanics must have multiple sets and various sizes of wrenches. Various sizes of hex head wrenches and star wrenches are also commonly used in marine engine applications. Occasionally, large leverage wrenches or two wrenches of the same size are necessary, and most small engine mechanics have several adjustable wrenches in the toolbox.
Pliers
-
Marine mechanics use pliers for a variety of applications. Needle pliers fit in small tight spaces and assist in delicate work. Large adjustable pliers grip items---such as stuck oil caps---and aid in the removal of objects that should be hand-tight but are not. Ring pliers remove ring washer connectors commonly used in all mechanical devices. Small adjustable pliers are used to bend, hold or tighten small objects.
Screwdrivers
-
Screwdrivers are invaluable tools for the marine mechanic. Many small engine adjustments and repairs are designed for screwdriver use. Screws are vital parts in the assembly of boats and marine engines. Marine engine covers are held in place with screws, and most small engine parts use screws instead of bolts. Marine instrument panels are also held in place with screws.
Power Tools and Testing Devices
-
Power tools and other diagnostic equipment aid marine mechanics in their work. Computerized engine analyzers, compression gauges, ammeters and voltmeters help mechanics locate faulty parts and tune engines. These devices provide a performance report of various components to compare against normal ratings.
