Gentamicin Sulfate for Dermatitis
Dermatitis is a severely itchy condition, and its onset is abrupt. It affects mainly elbows, knees, buttocks and scalp. Red and flaky skin is its hallmark. Dermatitis has different patterns, from simple skin allergy to consistent and recurrent infections to the skin and soft tissue. Gentamicin sulfate is a powerful antibiotic. It is usually given intravenously to patients in the treatment of various skin inflammations, including dermatitis. It is also available as a cream for tropical application.-
Bacterial Infections
-
Many pathogenic bacteria cause what is called atopic dermatitis. The resulting lesions provide an environment that can harbor several types of harmful bacteria. The condition is common in people with immune disorder because they have a reduced ability to resist pathogenic microorganisms. They generally secrete toxins that erode the tissue cells and cause allergy to the skin and eye. Gentamicin sulfate is a broad-spectrum antibiotic recommended for the control of bacterial skin infections. It particularly kills aerobic and gram negative bacteria such as Enterobacter.
Preventing Infection
-
Gentamicin is an antimicrobial therapy that has strong action against atopic dermatitis. Gentamicin sulfate provides highly effective topical treatment in primary and secondary bacterial skin infections. It damages the bacterial cell and destroys the pathogenic attack. Unlike other antibiotics, gentamicin sulfate has a bactericidal effect. It means that it kills bacteria instead of arresting its growth. Gentamicin sulfate can clear skin infections that have become hard to treat with other antibiotics.
Preparation
-
Gentamicin is available in 0.3 percent aqueous solution or in ointment form. The solution or drop of gentamicin sulfate is successfully used in various ocular disorders such as conjunctivitis or keratitis. Sometimes eye tissues can manifest fibrous cells after getting infected, in which gentamicin sulfate is effective. The same preparation can be used for bacterial ear infections. Eczematous dermatitis can develop in superficial skin and may gradually penetrate deeper . Gentamicin can alleviate this condition.
Application
-
The mode of administration of gentamicin sulfate depends upon its severity and area of infection. In most serious cases, it is injected. Otherwise, gentamicin sulfate ointment can cure dermatitis. The ointment does not cause any side effects and is commonly prescribed for infections in children
Side Effects
-
Gentamicin sulfate acts as an anti-bacteria agent, killing bacteria. However, it is not effective against viral and fungal skin infections. In some cases, gentamicin sulfate can damage ear tissue. It is also toxic to kidneys. Its side effects sometimes restrict its usage. Doctors are supposed to monitor a patient's health condition before prescribing gentamicin sulfate. It also cannot be used to treat areas near the eyes.
