Hotel Bathroom Safety
Hotel bathrooms help keep travelers comfortable while being away from home; however, there are certain safety issues that one must keep in mind. Hotel bathrooms can be designed differently and carry appliances that we are not used to, so surveying bathrooms for any potential safety risks is imperative when checking into a hotel room.-
Toilet Seats
-
Inspecting the toilet seat is important when checking into a hotel room as it can help prevent accidents and injuries. Check for any cracks or breakages on the toilet seat as they can pinch your upper thighs when sitting on the toilet. Be careful not to fall down heavily onto the toilet as most hotel bathrooms carry basic seats that are not made from strong materials. Falling heavily onto a weak toilet seat could cause it to break and result in an injury.
Slippery Surfaces
-
Hotel bathroom surfaces can become slippery when wet and some bathtubs do not come equipped with non-slip surfaces. Be careful when using the bathtub and shower or stepping out onto the tile floor when wet. Make sure you utilize the hotel's bathmats to help soak up any excess water.
When surveying the hotel's bathroom after check-in, take note of the number of towels you are given. Decide whether you may need more towels to help keep the bathroom drier and safer.
Bathroom Amenities
-
Most hotels offer their guests the use of complimentary amenities that include soaps, shampoos and conditioners. Before use, read the label of each bottle or bar of soap to determine if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. These bathroom amenities can be within easy reach of children, so make sure to secure them in a safe place.
Bathroom Handrails
-
Your hotel bathroom may come equipped with shower, tub and toilet grab bars to help you use these facilities in a safer manner. Inspect all bathroom grab bars and handrails to make sure they are securely fastened to the wall. When using handrails in the bathroom make sure to be extremely careful when lifting yourself off of the toilet or in and out of the bathtub and shower. Try not to put all of your weight onto the rails and, if possible, seek assistance from a family member or loved one.
Cleanliness
-
Although most hotels have strict standards when cleaning their bathrooms, inspect the tub, toilet and sink for any dirt or grime. Bathrooms are a popular host for bacteria and other germs and if you feel that your bathroom could pose a potential health risk, ask management to have it cleaned again. Traveling with disposable sanitary wipes can allow you to reduce the exposure to bacteria which can be found in the tub, shower, toilet and sink areas.
