Instructions

Visit the Safe Needle Disposal website and find specific information about your state's disposal laws. Find the states listed in alphabetical order with disposal information clearly outlined. Read the information carefully to make sure you understand it. Alternatively, call 1-800-643-1643 to inquire about your state's laws.

    • 2

Use a disposal container that adheres to your state's specific requirements. Some states require you to use a metal container; others require either metal or hard plastic. Most states prohibit the use of glass or soft plastic containers. Most states require that the lids of the disposal containers screw on tightly.

    • 3

Write either "Biohazard," "Not for Recycling" or "Sharps" clearly on the disposal container according to your state's instructions.

    • 4

Place the needles and syringes into the disposal container immediately after you use them, and seal the container tightly each time you finish adding a needle. Fill the container approximately half full.

    • 5

Secure the lid of the container with duct tape when you are ready to dispose of it.

    • 6

Dispose of the container using the disposal method stipulated by your state. Some states allow you to place the sharps directly into your own trash (not recycling). Other states require you to dispose of the sharps at a registered location created for sharps collection.
