How to Check for Black Mold

Black mold--sometimes called toxic black mold--is a fungus that can cause health problems in humans who inhale its spores. Black mold is usually associated with areas of high humidity and water-damaged buildings. It can grow in damp spaces and often remains undetected for months. A check for black mold involves searching for visual signs and keeping a nose out for musty smells.

Instructions

    • 1

Search for any leaks around your sinks and general plumbing. Black mold is often found in damp areas, according to the University of Minnesota. Look for water in closets under sinks and around bathroom tiles. If pipes or roofs are leaking, find out where the water is landing and check for black patches. Yellowing patches may be a sign of water damage or penetration--ideal locations for black mold growth.

Look out for damp areas of carpet and upholstery. If you live in a humid climate, it's worth checking under the carpets frequently. Look at areas where water can collect--such as the bottom of windowsills, the shower stall and the joins between walls and floors. Check for any musty, damp smells coming off your walls or carpet. This is usually a sign of developing mold. Peeling paintwork or cracked paint can also be a sign of moist conditions.

    • 3

Note any dark patches that appear on walls, flooring or anywhere else in the house. Take apart piles of papers and books that you might store in the basement or attic. Damp paper can easily harbor black mold. Black mold often grows in a rounded pattern.

    • 4

Inspect any areas that have been flooded in the past. Even water that was superficially cleared away can penetrate walls and flooring. Black mold may be growing in such areas.

    • 5

Be aware of any signs from your own body that your house may be affected by black mold. The fungus can cause respiratory problems, particularly sinus and chest issues. If you notice persistent coughs or sinus problems, it could be a sign of black mold.

Call a professional damp-proofing or mold specialist. He will be able to provide a definitive check for black mold. Such specialists will use instruments that can detect the interior moisture content in walls.
