How to Obtain a Food Handlers Card

A food handlers card is a requirement to work in the food industry. Protecting the public from foodborne illnesses by properly preparing food, sanitizing cooking equipment and practicing good hygiene are among the main responsibilities of those handling food. Food handlers cards are given to those who successfully complete training and testing administered by local health departments.

      Contact your local health department to learn more about testing dates and times. Most health departments offer testing at least once a day Monday through Friday during regular business hours.

      Review the food handlers manual provided by the health department. Contact the health department to ask for a copy or visit the health department's website. Some employers provide a copy of the manual to employees, or it may be available at your local library.

      Complete a short training class prior to testing. Bring a photo ID and other forms of identification requested by the health department.

      Complete the food handlers test. Food handlers cards may be distributed after testing or may be mailed to your address.
