Uses of Diode Switching

The basic function of a diode (an electronic device that has two electrodes or terminals) is to conduct electric current in a single direction. It is basically a twin terminal electronic component. Such diodes are also known as semiconductor diodes and they are often denoted by the P-N junction. They are used for a wide variety of purposes.
  1. Demodulation of Radio Signals

    • By demodulating AM radio broadcasts, diode switching enables the alteration of the positive as well as the negative peaks of voltage. The crystal diode used for this purpose simply alters the amplitude-modulated frequency signal, permiting you to hear an audible signal evoid of the usual noises of the atmosphere.

    Conversion of Power

    • Of the many uses of diode switching, the conversion of alternate current (AC) into direct current (DC) is perhaps the most important of all. Perfect examples include automobile alternators, wherein rectifiers are incorporated that are made from diodes for the conversion of AC into DC. Diodes are also used in improving the overall performance of dynamos as well as commutators.

    Stops High Voltage Damage

    • Another use of switching diodes is to bypass high voltages, which could be damaging to sensitive electronic devices. Such methods are generally non-conducting in nature and whenever the voltage rises above the prescribed limits, the diodes automatically switch to the above normal range and begin the process of conducting. A perfect example of diode switching would be the stepper motor wherein diodes simply de-energize the circuits at warp speed thereby saving the circuits from any serious damage.

    Application in Radiation Detectors

    • In the presence of energetic radiations, the semiconductor diodes start becoming sensitive. Cosmic rays can lead to noise pulses which in turn can cause multiple as well as single bit errors. Hence, in this scenario, particle detectors are applied in order to seek out the cause of direct radiation. Semiconductor detectors are therefore widely used for ionizing radio detectors.

    Application in Current Steering

    • Diode switching is also considered very effective in preventing currents from running in unintended directions. In the case of a power disrupt, the electric circuit can draw power from the battery. This is also referred to as uninterrupted power supply.

    Application in Logic Gates

    • Diodes are also used in the application of logic gates. They are mainly used in the construction of AND and OR gates. This phenomenon is also termed as diode logic.

    The Measurement Of Temperature

    • Diode switching is also used to measure temperature. A perfect example of this phenomenon is the silicon bandgap temperature sensor.
