Computer Operator Duties

The use of computers has become indispensable in almost all sectors and office operations today. This has consequently created a demand for computer professionals to work in different capacities in various segments. A computer operator's job requires the candidate to work with computers on a regular basis and perform a number of activities and functions, depending on the job title and location.

    • Ideally, a computer operator should be an active listener, must be a critical thinker and an active learner. The operator must also possess good decision-making capabilities and be adept with troubleshooting. Willingness to help people is also a prerequisite.

      * Maintaining computer data, disks, files and related material and storing them in an orderly manner.

      * Maintaining client databases, retrieving and segregating data and sending it to relevant parties.

      * Troubleshooting in case of emergencies.

      * Keeping a record of the computer use of others for either supervision or security reasons, and setting computer controls accordingly.

      * Keeping track of computer equipment orders and inventory.

      In sum, a computer operator's duties and responsibilities may vary greatly depending upon the job specifications and the sector in which the job is located. Sound computer knowledge and a deft understanding of system operations are the core qualities an applicant must possess.
