What Are Normal Urinalysis Results?

Urinalysis is the process of examining a urine sample for the presence and levels of chemicals that pass out of the body through the urine. Results are normal when the various methods of urine sample inspection do not reveal a medical condition, contamination or intoxication.
  1. Urinalysis

    • Urinalysis refers to the macroscopic, microscopic and chemical examination of a urine sample. Urinalysis may be administered for a variety of medical purposes as well as a type of drug screen.

    Normal Results

    • Urinalysis produces results differently at the three levels of examination. Results are normal when there is no evidence of illness or intoxication.

    Macroscopic

    • A normal urine sample is generally clear when examined with the naked eye. A cloudy or discolored urine sample may indicate the presence of a medical disorder.

    Microscopic

    • Results of the microscopic examination of a urine sample are considered to be normal if there are not above average levels of white or red blood cells, epithelial cells, bacteria, crystals or other substances.

    Chemical

    • According to MayoClinic.com, a chemical dipstick is dipped into the urine sample to test for levels of acidity, concentration, proteins, sugars, blood and evidence of infection. Results are normal if the levels of the chemicals being tested for are not above average.
