OSHA Ammunition Regulations

Ammunition is classified as an explosive and blasting agent. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) officials follow 29CFR 1910.109 to regulate explosives and blasting agents. Classification, handling, storage and transportation of explosives and blasting agents are included in this regulation.
  1. Definitions

    • An explosive is any chemical compound, mixture or device used to function by explosion. A blasting agent is "any material or mixture, consisting of a fuel and oxidizer, intended for blasting."

    Classification

    • Class A explosives are those with detonation capability, such as dynamite and black powder. Propellant explosives and some fireworks are considered Class B explosives. Class C explosives are items containing either Class A or Class B, or both in small quantities.

    Storage

    • The distance between magazines increases as the weight of the explosive material increases. The composition of the magazines varies with the class of the explosive.

    Handling

    • No smoking or possession of an open flame is allowed while using explosives. Intoxicated people are not allowed to use explosives.

    Transportation

    • Vehicles carrying explosive material must be properly marked with placards, equipped with fire extinguishers, and be completely operational. In the event of a breakdown or accident, the local fire and police departments have to be informed.
