How to Minimize Body Misalignment Due to Crutches

Body misalignment occurs when weight isn't evenly distributed among the muscles and ligaments. The torso no longer appears as a straight line when it is misaligned. Instead, it zigzags, which can cause nerve damage and pain. Using crutches improperly can cause body misalignment because the crutches are not fully able to do their part and support your injured leg. Crutches must be sized and used correctly to prevent further damage to your body.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the distance between the crutch pads (located at the top of the crutches) and your armpits when the shoulders are relaxed. There should be 1 1/2 to 2 inches of space.

    • 2

Place your hand on the hand grip, which is the metal bar located under the crutch pad. It should be positioned so your elbow is slightly bent when your hand is on it. If your arm is fully extended or your elbow is fully bent, the hand grip is not in the correct place and needs to be adjusted.

    • 3

Get into the correct position by placing the crutch tips (located at the bottom of the crutches) to the outside of each foot 4 to 6 inches and in front of each foot 4 to 6 inches. Only put your weight on your uninjured leg and never on the injured leg.

Put your weight on the crutches and advance the crutches and your injured leg like you are taking a step with them, and then step with your uninjured leg out in front of the crutches. These are the steps you should repeat every time you walk with your crutches.

Keep the crutches completely vertical to the ground as you use them. This can be achieved by not putting them too far in front of you.
