Water Leak Detection Instruments

Water leak detection instruments are small electronic alarms that are strategically placed to detect water leakage. They are generally placed in areas where there are chances of leakage. It could be near the central water heater, near the dishwasher, or under the toilet tanks, where water might leak due to a rupture or hole in the hoses or pipes. These instruments emit a very loud and piercing alarm when they come in contact with water. Depending on the instruments, these alarms may continue for up to 72 hours. High-tech detectors can call a predetermined telephone number, very much like security systems.

    • Water leak detection instruments can be as simple as a modified doorbell transformer or as complex as highly-sophisticated detection systems. There are two types of water leak detection instruments--active and passive.

    Passive Water Leak Detection Instruments

    • These are simple battery-operated instruments placed individually at sites prone to water leaks. They emit sharp alarms or flashing lights when they detect leaks. These alarms can warn you of a leak and alert you to action.

    Modified Doorbell Transformer

    • A simple doorbell transformer can be modified with the help of some copper wire, two transistors, and a sponge, to become a functional water leak detection instrument. Place this under a water heater or any other site where flooding may be expected. Remember to mount the speaker on the wall so the alarm sounds clearly enough for you to hear at a distance.

    Active Water Leak Detection Instruments

    • Active water leak detection instruments not only alert, but also take action against a leak. They can be programmed to shut off the main water supply or call a telephone number to inform about the leakage even as the alarm sounds. Individual active water leak detection instruments can be used for an individual appliance like the dishwasher, water heater, or washing machine. House active water leak detection instrument/systems involve placing sensors in all probable water leak sites. These sensors work to shut off the water supply to the house as soon as they come in contact with water.

    Underground Water Leak Detection Instruments

    • Specialized acoustic detection instruments are used to detect underground leaks and prevent disasters from happening. They are usually digital and use sophisticated microphones to detect leakages acoustically. These instruments detect the mild murmuring of water as it leaks out of confined places.
