Uses for Silicone Adhesive

Silicone is one of the more recently discovered materials, only officially named in the early 1940s. Silicone is obtained from silicon, which is a chemical element present in nature. Silicone has a number of uses because it has several useful features like capacity to withhold in extreme temperatures. It is also resistant against water, oxygen and even ultra violet rays.
  1. Adhesive

    • Silicone is also extremely malleable and has self sealing and healing properties. Due to its self sealing and healing capability, silicone is used as an adhesive. Silicone adhesives are widely used in various processes and products today.

Silicone adhesive is quite flexible when compared to other adhesives because it is more durable. Silicone adhesives are capable of bonding surface to surface making them useful as heavy duty adhesives.

    Glass

    • Silicone adhesives are used to paste glass on glass and is widely in aquariums, glass decorations and also to stick glass to other objects. Most glass tank manufacturers use silicone to bond the various pieces of glass that are used to create a glass tank or an aquarium.

    Buildings

    • Silicone has the capacity to handle the most extreme of temperatures so it is used in heavy duty bonding in the construction industry. Silicone adhesives are used to bond objects and materials that must withstand temperature extremes like sunlight, rain and cold winters. Most traditional sealants and adhesives would fail under such extreme temperature fluctuations.

    Cures

    • Silicone adhesives are also used in cure systems where it acts as the agent that activates the bonding properties of the cure system. For example, the silicone adhesive is used in the radiation curing process, as well as the thermostat curing system. Silicone adhesives are also used in the room temperature vulcanizing types.

    Art

    • Silicone adhesives are sometimes also used in art. This type of adhesive is perfect for applying acrylic to glass and glass to other objects. Silicone is clear and odorless and therefore is used whenever an adhesive that is transparent needs to be used. This does require a special caulking gun.
