X-Ray, MRI and CT Safety
X-rays, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) offer invaluable diagnostic assistance, but certain risks exist with all three technologies.-
X-Rays
-
X-rays create photographic shadows when they hit internal structures such as tumors or bones, according to eNotAlone.com. X-ray radiation can cause cancer, burns, or birth defects if misused.
MRI
-
MRI creates a magnetic field around the patient to display internal images. Although the magnetism normally poses no risks, it may cause injury or even death in people with metal implants, according to the Alliance Medical website.
CT
-
CT scans use X-ray technology to take hundreds of images instead of just one, revealing extra detail. As with other types of X-ray scanning, the radiation from CT scans could prove dangerous during pregnancy.
Contrast Agents
-
Both CT and MRI may use contrast agents injected into the body to aid imaging. These contrast agents do not harm the general population but may pose health risks for patients with kidney problems.
Considerations
-
Pregnant women must avoid X-rays or CT scans, whereas people with pacemakers or other implants should avoid MRI scans. People with kidney disease should tell their doctors before accepting contrast agents.
