Uses for Old Cell Phones

Cell phone technology has become so cheap and has improved so greatly in the past few years that phones are used and changed like clothes and any other accessories. Also, there are so many new features in every cell phone that makes many phones obsolete in two years. The faster rate of abandonment means there are numerous unused cell phones. Here's how to put them back in service, for good.
  1. Spare Phone

    • All cell phones use a battery, and a dead battery could mean you have to delay an important phone call. Instead, keep an old cell phone around as a backup. This will really come in handy when your other phone is at the serviceman’s or is simply out of battery. In most cases, you can simply move your newer phone's SIM card into the old phone to make a quick call.

    Gift for Younger Children

    • Depending on how you have used your phone, you can also gift it to your younger friends, siblings, relatives, etc. The cell phone has become such a personal accessory today, just like the pen or a ring or a chain that gifting your personal phone to someone has a lot of value and symbolism to it.

    Engineering

    • If you are into engineering, you would not even have to read this to understand that you have a machine in hand that has grown past its usability and now can be tampered and experimented with. If you know how to, you can open up your cell phone and learn some great practical knowledge about the greatest communication device known to humankind.

    For the Technophobe

    • How many parents are comfortable using the latest touch-screen cell phones? Many of the people of the older generation would have loved to stop the insane progress of technology years back. They would still prefer the tactile phones to call their loved ones. You can gift them any of your old phones so that they can make any calls that they want.

    Donate It

    • Many women's shelters take old cell phones as donations, which they provide for battered women to have a way to make emergency calls. Some groups collect old cell phones and other small electronics in fund-raising campaigns. Do this instead of simply throwing a phone away--the components and battery contain hazardous material that should be recycled, not buried in a landfill.
