How to Get Rid of a Skunk Smell on People

If a skunk sprays you, the spray can permeate your skin and a strong, repulsive odor can linger. It's important to quickly wash your clothes and bathe to get rid of the smell, but in some cases you may need to take additional steps to fully remove the odor. It's also important to avoid getting spray in your eyes as it can cause temporary blindness. Such remedies as a hydrogen peroxide bath should ultimately remove the smell from you or your pet if it is sprayed.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove your clothes that have been sprayed and wash them immediately as you normally would wash your clothes. Use a strong detergent with an odor remover in it if you have one available.

    • 2

Take a shower and thoroughly wash your skin using soap. Bathe as if you normally would and then dry off with a towel. Continue to Step 3 if the skunk odor is still on your body.

    • 3

Blend at least 5 oranges in a blender. Add the blended oranges, 1 cup of liquid soap and 1 cup of warm water to a spray bottle. Spray the mixture onto a cloth. Lather yourself with the mixture and then let it sit on your skin for at least 10 minutes.

    • 4

Mix 1 quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, 1 tsp. of liquid detergent and ¼ cup of baking soda into a large spray bottle. The sodium bicarbonate has properties that will help to naturally eliminate the smell. Spray the mixture onto a cloth and apply it to your body.

    • 5

Rinse off and use regular soap and shampoo again. After drying off, the odor should finally be removed. If the smell isn't gone you may need to consider purchasing an odor-removing shampoo or skunk remover product.
