The Importance of Spaying & Neutering

It's often a joy when your family pet gives birth to a new litter of kittens or puppies. However, the joy can be short-lived when repeated births occur or you're unable to find homes for the animals. Spaying female animals and neutering male animals is a solution for your problem and that of pet overpopulation, according to the American Humane Society are performed to stop animals from breeding.

  1. The Problem

    • According to AHS, approximately 10 million cats and dogs are euthanized each year in the United States because not enough homes can be found for these animals.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Spaying and neutering reduces overpopulation and can be performed on an animal at six weeks of age.

    Improved Personalitty

    • After the procedure, your pet's personality will not change for the worse. According to AHS, your pet will actually become calmer.

    Health Benefits

    • Spayed animals have lower risks of illnesses, like cancer, according to PBS. In addition to improved health, neutered animals are less aggressive and tend to roam less.

    Misconceptions

    • According to AHS, it isn't true that only female animals should be fixed. Males can father thousands of offspring too.
