Exercise 20 to 30 minutes a day to decrease the level of cortisol in your body. Walking, running, biking, or even playing games are all good forms of exercise.

Eat healthy. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, poultry, lean meats, low-fat or fat-free milk and nuts are some good foods to start eating more of to improve your diet and balance your cortisol level.

Relax your mind, which will decrease your stress and help reduce excess cortisol. Meditation is a great way to relax, as is yoga. Try different stress-reducing methods to find one that best suits you.

Start taking supplements. Some supplements including ginkgo biloba, phosphatidylserine, and DHEA may reduce the levels of cortisol.

Stop smoking. Researchers at Dundee University's Division of Pathology and Neurosciences in Scotland found that smoking causes physical changes in your brain that inhibit the transmission of serotonin (the body's natural stress-relieving hormone). The result is that smokers becoming deficient in serotonin and their stress levels rise.
