What Role Does the Liver Play in a Human?

The liver is responsible for more than 200 functions in the human body. The liver is the largest internal organ in humans, and it is vital to your health.
  1. Vitamins

    • The liver stores vitamins such as vitamin A, C, B12, E and K to be released when the body needs them.

    Sugar

    • The liver also stores sugar, and it releases sugar to the bloodstream when the body needs energy quickly.

    Chemicals

    • The liver is in charge of distributing chemicals throughout the body and maintaining balanced ratios of chemicals. Some of these chemicals include albumin, hepcidin, cholesterol and glycogen.

    Toxins

    • As we ingest toxins through food, smoke, chemicals and the air, the liver works to cleanse our bodies of these toxins.

    Bile

    • The liver makes bile, which is used in digestion to help break down foods.

    Blood Clotting

    • Our blood clots thanks to the liver's production of clotting factors like fibrinogen and prothrombin.
