Is It Okay to Sleep With an Electric Blanket?

It is okay for most people to sleep with an electric blanket. However, it is important to follow safety rules and check electric blankets for fire hazards and other problems.
  1. EMF Safety

    • According to the National Research Council, electromagnetic fields (EMFs) produced by electric blankets do not cause cancer, reproductive issues or behavioral problems. Regardless, modern electric blankets produce much lower EMFs than older models.

    Fire Hazards

    • Electric blankets can overheat and start fires if the coils are damaged. Never lay on the blanket, bunch it up and leave it on, or iron or wash it. If you toss and turn a lot in your sleep, an electric blanket might not be for you.

    Health Concerns

    • People who have diabetes or other conditions that reduce sensitivity should avoid electric blankets, as they can get burned without realizing it. Pregnant women should talk to their doctors about using electric blankets.

    Considerations

    • According to a 1999 study at the University of South Australia's Centre for Sleep Research, electric blankets may increase body temperature too much, leading to disrupted sleep. Look for models with automatic shutoff and adjustable temperatures; otherwise turn off the blanket before you go to sleep.

    Long-Term Care

    • According to the UK Fire Service Resources Group, you should replace your electric blanket every 10 years or if it appears scorched, frayed, creased, damp or dirty.
