Difference Between Electrotherapy & Physiotherapy

Electrotherapy and physiotherapy are similar in that they are both types of therapy. Beyond that, though, they have their differences.

    • Electrotherapy is the use of electrical currents as a method of medical treatment. Physiotherapy uses physical movement or stimulation as a method of medical treatment; thus, it is also known as physical therapy.

    Use

    • Electrotherapy is often used to speed up the healing of wounds and stimulate muscle contraction. Physiotherapy is applied to situations in which mobility needs to be improved.

    Precautions

    • Electrotherapy patients always need to be checked for potential burns from electrodes or poorly placed wires. Physiotherapy patients need to reveal their medical histories to determine the level of exercise they need.

    Electrotherapy as Part of Physiotherapy

    • In some cases, physiotherapy may use electrical currents for stimulation as part of the physical regimen for patients.

    Similarities

    • Electrotheraphy and physiotherapy are similar in that they are both used to relieve pain. Generally, they are two types of therapy meant to restore health.
