Jcaho Pain Treatment Standards
The Joint Commission has 18 chapters in their Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for hospitals, one dedicated to Patient Care, Treatment and Services. In this chapter is a requirement that specifically addresses patient pain.-
Pain assessments
-
The first element of performance of the patient pain requirement is that the hospital must perform a pain assessment that is all inclusive and relates to the care, treatment and services regarding the patient's overall condition.
Appropriate assessment
-
Another element of performance is that the organization uses appropriate means for pain assessment that follows in line with the patients condition and age.
Reassessment
-
The third element of performance indicates that patients should regularly reassess that patient's pain.
Treatment
-
The fourth element of performance requires the health care organization treat the patients pain effectively or at the very least, refers the patient to another facility for treatment.
Policy
-
The Joint Commission leaves room for the organizations to develop their own pain assessment tools, however, they must follow the above guidelines and also follow their own set policy once it is made. The Joint Commission will check during their survey to make sure this requirement is in compliance.
