How to Dispose of a Fentanyl Patch

Fentanyl patches are prescribed medication provided on a skin patch for chronic moderate to severe pain. Fentanyl is a strong narcotic medication that can cause serious side effects and overdose situations. The patch is attached to the skin in a discreet location, such as the upper part of the arm or shoulder. The patch still has medication on it after removal, so it's important to dispose of it properly for the safety of household members and pets.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the patch from the skin. If removal of the patch is done by someone other than the patient, ensure that patch is removed with care with the tips of the fingers to avoid getting a potentially harmful dose of the fentanyl on your skin.

    • 2

Fold the patch in half and firmly press the sticky sides together.

    • 3

Flush the used, folded patch down the toilet. Make sure it pass from the toilet and does not remain in the bowl.

    • 4

Wash your hands with soap and water after disposing of a fentanyl patch to remove any medication that may have gotten on your skin.

    • 5

Unused fentanyl patches can be disposed of by opening, folding and flushing down the toilet as with a used patch. You can also get rid of unused fentanyl patches by delivering them to a local medication take-back program.
