What Are the Treatments for Genital Scabies?

Scabies is an itchy rash caused by a mite that is about 0.4 mm long. The mite lays eggs that hatch into mites within a matter of days. Scabies can affect both men and women at any age. Scabies is very common; it's estimated that there are at least 300 million cases worldwide each year.
  1. Causes

    • The main problem in determining the presence of scabies is that the mite that causes the condition is too tiny to be seen by the naked eye. Scabies is passed from direct body to body contact. Genital scabies is passed through contact with another person's genitals. Once the mite lays 10 to 25 eggs; it dies and the eggs hatch three days later.

    Scabies Treatment

    • The main treatment for genital scabies is an over-the-counter cream containing permethrin or a lotion that contains malathion. The ingredients in these creams will generally kill the mites. Re-application after seven days will help to guarantee that all the mites are killed. While you have genital scabies you should avoid having sex.

    Treatment of the Itch

    • Creams that kill the mites may not address the itching sensation. To treat the itch, try using topical steroids that are applied to the itchy spots as well as oral antihistamines. These products will help ease the pain while the mite-killing treatment is in effect.

    Time Frame

    • The itch and rash of genital scabies can take up to three weeks to completely go away. The process can take this long if the cream isn't applied correctly or in the correct area of skin. Also, the process can be prolonged if the person continues with sexual activity.

    Warning

    • It's important to remember that if the itching and rash symptoms continue past the two to three week period after treatment, a doctor's expertise is advised. It may require additional treatment.
