Signs of Human Parasites
When we think of parasites and the various symptoms that go along with their infection, gastrointestinal problems usually come to mind--gas and bloating, diarrhea and the like. But the fact is, these little creepy crawlies can produce a multitude of different, seemingly unconnected and surprisingly random symptoms. Keep in mind that parasitic symptoms are frustratingly similar to common conditions, so just because you may have one or two signs doesn't necessarily mean you've become home to some unwelcome guests.-
Allergy
-
Parasites are lousy tenants and care little for the condition of their home. Some can not only irritate, but also perforate, the intestinal lining, which increases the bowel's exposure to undigested matter. This activates the body's immune system response, which is to produce increased levels of eosinophils, a type of fighter cells in the body. The eosinophils itself can inflame body tissue, which results in an allergic reaction. Parasites, like allergies, can trigger an increase in the production of immunoglobulin E.
Skin Conditions
-
Skin conditions can be caused by any number of triggers, from allergies to sensitivities to certain irritants. But intestinal worms can sometimes cause hives, rashes and other allergic-type skin reactions, and a protozoan invasion can cause swellings and sores. If a new rash or skin condition crops up suddenly and persistently despite any attempts on your part to clear it, there could be a more sinister cause.
Nervousness
-
Parasites' wastes and various toxic secretions can serve as irritants to the central nervous system. Restlessness and anxiety are often the result of parasitic infestation, and the symptoms reportedly diminish once the host completes an herbal cleanse to rid himself of the toxins.
Sleep Disturbances
-
There are two theories behind this symptom, one a little more scientific than the other. The first comes from Chinese medicine, which states that waking often during the night is caused by the body's attempt to eliminate toxic wastes via the liver. The second, and more scientific, theory is that the sleep interruptions are caused by the activity of certain parasites as they exit through the anus, creating great discomfort and itching.
Teeth Grinding
-
Teeth grinding has been observed in cases of parasitic infestation, most notably among sleeping children. It is thought to possibly be a nervous response to the internal irritants. If you've suddenly developed the habit of grinding your teeth out of the blue, a test for internal invaders may not be a bad idea.
Chronic Fatigue
-
Parasites are capable of causing various traits classified under chronic fatigue, such as tiredness, flu-like complaints and impaired concentration. These physical, mental and emotional symptoms are caused by malnutrition resulting from lack of proteins and vitamins due to the overabundance and voracious appetite of the parasites. We all feel a little run down every now and then, but if it is persistent and nothing seems to help, talk to your doctor about being tested.
