Dangerous Flu Symptoms

Flu can cause serious complications in some people. Dehydration, bacterial pneumonia, ear infections and sinus problems can develop in all types of influenza, whether seasonal or newly detected strains. Chronic medical conditions like asthma, diabetes and congestive heart failure can exhibit worsening symptoms when the flu is also present.
Serious complications from the seasonal flu lead to tens of thousands of deaths each year, and it is important to recognize when to seek medical advice.
  1. Breathing Difficulty

    • If the patient is having labored breathing or complains of shortness of breath, get medical advice.

    Vomiting

    • Persistent vomiting can cause dehydration. If vomiting is severe or persistent, call the doctor.

    Pain

    • Chest or abdominal pain or pressure could signal a medical emergency.

    Dizziness

    • Dizziness is a severe symptom of flu. Watch the patient carefully as medical attention may be needed.

    Dehydration

    • It is important for fluids to be replenished when a person is ill. If the patient is not drinking fluids or has a hard time keeping fluids down, call for professional advice.

Additional Symptoms to Watch for in Children

    • If the child has a fever and a rash, has a hard time waking up, or refuses to interact, call the doctor. Medical advice is also needed if the child refuses fluids.
