Types of Abused Prescription Drugs

In 2007, 20.3 percent of the population aged 12 or older reported non-medical use of some drugs (see Prescription Drug Facts in Resources below). Improper use of prescription drugs can lead to addiction, and obtaining prescription drugs for sale as street drugs is a growing law enforcement and legal problem.
  1. Pain Relievers

    • High on the list of abused drugs prescribed for pain relief are opioids such as morphine, codeine, OxyContin and Vicodin. These drugs are addictive when misused, and are popular street drugs (see Resources).

    Tranquilizers

    • Tranquilizers like Valium, Halcion and Xanax are prescribed to relieve anxiety, stress and sleep disorders. They are considered abused drugs in addition to their notoriety as street drugs (see Resources).

    Stimulants

    • Ritalin (used for ADHD) has come under increased scrutiny due to its overuse as a prescribed medication (see Resources).

    Sedatives

    • On the list of abused sedatives are the barbiturates Methaqualone, Seconal and Phenobarbital. Overuse of these drugs, even when taken in prescribed doses, can lead to dependence (see Resources).

    Anabolic Steroids

    • Anadrol, Oxandrin and Testosterone are among the anabolic steroids listed as abused drugs. Steroids, used and abused by those desiring to enhance physique and physical performance, are banned from competitive sports (see Resources).
