Pros of Organ Donation

Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) data shows between January and November of 2008 more than 25,600 men, women and children received a donated organ. These gifts were mostly given through the generosity of total strangers. Though there is a large donor shortage, every day medical personnel, hospitals, laboratories, and transport people work together to make donations happen. In the midst of tragedy and loss, the pros of organ donation will last a lifetime.

    • The effects of organ donation are far-reaching, extending to the friends and family of the recipient.

    Donors

    • Between January and November of 2008, the OPTN reports almost 13,000 individuals donated organs. According to the Mayo Clinic, many donor families report organ donation aids in the grieving process.

    Age Limits

    • There are no age limits on organ donors. According to the Mayo Clinic, even a newborn or senior citizen are eligible to donate a healthy organ.

    Organs

    • The heart, kidneys, lungs, pancreas, liver and intestines can be donated. According to the Mayo Clinic, one individual can save up to eight lives and enhance the lives of up to 40 others through organ donation.

    Tissue

    • Corneas, veins, tendons, bone, bone marrow, skin, heart valves and connective tissue can also be donated. According to the Mayo Clinic, one donor can impact up to 60 lives through organ and tissue donation.
