Choose a cigar that has a wonderful aroma, a pleasing aftertaste and is very fresh. While it is a little more art than science, there are a number of things you can do to check the freshness of your cigar.Instructions

1
Ask to see the cigar you are purchasing or smoking up close. You will need to view, touch and smell the cigar to get a better idea of its freshness. Check or ask for the cigar ring size. The standard size is 1/64th of an inch and larger sizes are considered better quality. Although this does not determine freshness, it can determine care put into the cigar.

2
Smell the cigar for a pungent aroma. If you can't immediately smell a strong, satisfying cigar aroma then it may be stale or kept in poor conditions.
-
3
Take the cigar between your fingers and press slightly. It should be spongy enough that you can compress it but strong enough to resist any lasting indentation.
-
4
Check for a little bit of bloom in the cigar, as that is a proper sign of adequate aging. This will appear as tiny dots on the cigar.

Ask your tobacconist for advice if you are still having trouble determining the freshness. Use their experience to your benefit. They will be happy to give you advice on the best quality cigars and will suggest others for you to purchase.
