Forgetfulness & Smoking

Although cigarettes and cigar are harmful for health, they do not cause forgetfulness. On the other hand, marijuana is associated with forgetfulness, says Princeton University. Marijuana contains more tar, carbon monoxide and cancer-causing hydrocarbons than a tobacco cigarette.
  1. Causes

    • Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is the active substance in marijuana that blocks the neurotransmitters needed for memory. Cannabis acts on the hippocampus, hindering the cognitive functions of the brain, leading to memory loss, says physorg.com.

    Effects

    • Marijuana has been shown to cause more psychological dependence rather than physical dependence, and the addiction is not as intense as for cigarette smokers. Everyday users have impaired cognitive function and have difficulty in learning and concentration, says Princeton University. THC also negatively affects fertility.

    Warning

    • Regular marijuana users build up a tolerance, and they require more of the drug to experience getting "high." Withdrawal symptoms include fatigue, headaches and mood changes. With longer-term use, you will experience short-term memory loss and difficulty in thinking abstractly, according to Princeton University.
