StopSmokingQuit.com reports that one in two smokers will die because of smoking. They also report that smoking causes the lungs to be coated with tar which leads to cancer. Smoking can also cause or contribute to heart attacks and strokes because smoking increases blood pressure and slows the flow of oxygen in the smoker's body.
Smoking Hurts Children

Smoking harms children who grow up with parents who smoke, even if the parents smoke outside the house. A study done by the Columbus Children's Hospital found that even children of parents who reported smoking outside the house still had byproducts of smoking in their hair. According to No-Smoking.org, studies have shown that second-hand smoke harms newborn development and carries a risk of childhood asthma. Also, they say that children of smokers are more likely to become smokers themselves. The American Cancer Society also links parental smoking to increased incidents of SIDS: the unexplained death of an infant while sleeping.
Smoking Hurts Pets

Smoking around pets can cause them to have health problems, too. Tobacco Free Utah reports that smoking can cause heart problems in cats and dogs as well as lung cancer in dogs and feline lymphoma in cats. Cigarettes can also be fatal to cats and dogs if ingested.
