Information on Smoking in Public Places
According to the Science Daily website, bans on smoking in public places had been introduced in 32 states and numerous cities throughout the United States by 2009.-
Illness

The Washington State Legislature website reports that it introduced a ban on smoking in public and work places in order to reduce the risks of secondhand smoke, which causes illness in nonsmokers. Illness and disease associated with secondhand smoke include cancer, heart disease, asthma and bronchitis.
Reduction in Heart Disease

Science Daily reports that by introducing bans on smoking in public places, the risk of suffering smoking-related heart disease was reduced by 26 percent. A nationwide ban on smoking in public places is estimated to reduce heart attacks throughout the United States by more than 154,000.
Public Places

The New York State Department of Health enforces a ban on smoking in public places in the state of New York and publishes a list of public places. Included on this list are bars, food service establishments, places of employment and public transport terminals.
