Smoking in the Workplace Health & Safety

Smoking was an integral part of life for many Americans as recently as the late 20th century. By 2010, however, smoking had been banned in public places--including the workplace--in many states. In the workplace, a smoking ban positively affects health, safety, cost and productivity issues.
  1. Workplace Smoking Bans

    • Employers have the right to ban smoking in the workplace even if the state allows it. According to the American Lung Association, employers may choose to restrict smoking or to enforce a completely smoke-free environment. Some companies have gone as far as demanding that employees either quit smoking altogether--the habit raises health insurance costs for the companies--or quit their jobs.

    Health Benefits

    • A smoke-free work environment carries with it several health benefits. Nonsmokers call in sick less frequently than do smokers. Secondhand smoke is a viable cancer risk. Asthma attacks can be brought on by exposure to secondhand smoke. Smokers who aren't allowed to smoke at work may be more likely to quit than those who smoke around the clock.

    Safety Benefits

    • Fire in the workplace is a legitimate concern for employers who allow smoking. A lit or smoldering cigarette or match can quickly ignite loose paper or fabrics. Burns from dropped cigarettes are also a factor.

    Cost Benefits

    • According to the American Cancer Society, workplace maintenance costs drop when smoke, cigarettes and matches are not allowed. Furniture, carpet and office equipment last longer in a smoke-free environment. Employers benefit from rates on lower health, life and disability insurance when the number of employees who smoke drops.

    Productivity Benefits

    • Employers who maintain a smoke-free environment realize increased productivity because non-smokers call in sick less frequently. Non-smokers also don't tend to take the equivalent of a smoke break, several times per day, thus increasing potential productivity.
