Stop Smoking Products
According to the American Lung Association, smoking causes more than 400,000 deaths a year. It also has negative effects on appearance, self-esteem, energy and stress levels. While it can be extremely difficult to quit smoking, the rewards and benefits of a smoke-free life are greater than one might think. There is a wide array of prescription and non-prescription products available to help one stop smoking. If you are one of those people that says "I'll quit next week" or "I just can't do it," there may be a product that is right for you to overcome the need for nicotine.-
Prescription Medications
-
One of the most effective methods of quitting smoking is through prescription medications such as Bupropion (Zyban®) or Varenicline (Chantix™). Either of these can be prescribed by your primary care physician and purchased from most drug stores. Both have been approved by the FDA as successful aids to quit smoking. They work by decreasing the cravings for nicotine and taking away the pleasure of smoking. If you think one of these products is right for you, call your physician for additional information.
Smoking deterrents
-
If prescription medication is not right for you, there are several products that can be purchased over the counter at your local pharmacy. The three main forms of OTC treatment are nicotine patches, gum and lozenges. They all work by releasing controlled doses of nicotine into the bloodstream over a period of time. The side effects can include headaches, dizziness and nausea. One major advantage to using these products is that they are discreet and can be used anywhere.
Herbal Remedies and Supplements
-
This method is becoming increasingly popular, however, these products have not been approved by the FDA and should be used with caution. Some herbal remedies include: Oat Straw, Valerian, Lobelia and St. John's Wort. These products can be purchased in many grocery stores and pharmacies. Always consult with your physician before using these products, and if you experience any unusual side effects, discontinue use immediately.
Nicotine Water and Wafers
-
These products have been created as a way to get nicotine to people who cannot smoke, but can be helpful as an aid to quit smoking. They are not as readily available as some of the products previously mentioned, but can be purchased over the Internet.
Nicotine Lollipops and Lip Balms
-
These products are considered to be illegal and should not be used.
Nicotine Vaccines
-
These vaccines are still being developed and are not available. They are expected to trigger the body's immune system to block nicotine from reaching the brain and reduce the physical pleasure that is attained from smoking. One shot would last up to one year.
