Oxygen Generator Safety

Oxygen generators are used in situations where the air supply isn't constant or is in doubt. The devices are used in airplanes, submarines and space programs such as the international space station. They are also used in firefighting and mine rescue. Concentrated oxygen is highly flammable and most pressurized chemicals are potentially explosive.
  1. Handling

    • The gas cylinders which feed oxygen generators should always be secured in a way ensuring they will not tip or fall. They should never be installed near elevators, stairs or other passageways. Cylinders should also never be dragged, struck or dropped.

    Environment

    • It is extremely important to keep generators away from flames or electricity. This includes not allowing smoking near them, not placing them near equipment that uses flames and keeping them away from electrical circuits.

    Valves

    • Valves should be open and closed slowly in all cases. Oxygen valves should be completely closed when the machine is not in use. A leaking oxygen cylinder should be taken outside if the leak cannot be quickly shut off and the supplier should be contacted for further instructions. If there is any visible damage to any part of the generator or cylinder it should not be used at all.

    Disposal

    • Cylinders should be completely cleared of oxygen before they are shipped or sent for disposal. Failure to do so could lead to fires or other dangers in transit or at disposal facilities.
