How to Move a Trash Can Uphill

Moving a trash-can uphill may sound easy enough, but depending on your situation it can be rather difficult. This is especially true if the hill is steep and your trash can is heavy -- or the trash-can does not have wheels to drag it uphill. If you have tried to pull or push it uphill but are unsure -- or feel unsafe -- about taking it uphill, try another method.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Park the pickup truck on a flat surface and open the tail gate. If you can, pick up the trash-can and place it in back of the pickup truck. If the trash container is heavier than you are comfortable with lifting, do not risk injury.

Place loading ramps onto the back of the truck. The front of these ramps will sit on the back of the tailgate while the bottom of the ramps will sit on the ground. If your trash-can has wheels, drag it up the ramps; if not, place a dolly underneath the trash-can and lift up. With the trash-can facing away from you, get into the back of the pickup truck and pull the dolly into the back. If the trash-can is too heavy, you will need an extra person to push the dolly into the back.

Open the driver's-side door of the truck. Sit inside and power on the truck. Drive up the hill slowly so you do not throw the trash-can out of the back of the pickup. Once uphill, turn the truck off and open the tail gate. Sit the loading ramps on back of the tailgate and place the dolly underneath the trash can. Very slowly, push the dolly atop the loading ramps and gently push it along the loading ramps. Place the trash-can wherever you prefer on top of the hill by way of the dolly and pull the dolly from underneath the trash can.
