1
Care for your car year around but especially during the winter months. At the beginning of winter, have a mechanic perform a diagnostic test on your car to ensure it is in good condition for the winter. You may want to replace the oil with winter grade and also replace your tires with winter treads that are suitable for the environment you will be driving in. Also, keep at least half a tank of gas in your car at all times during the winter months to prevent your gas from freezing.

2
Keep a winter emergency kit in your car at all times. If it is used at anytime, replace the missing or used item. Extra clothes, flashlights with extra batteries, and a 3 day supply of food and water are essential for this kit. This kit is a necessity because it could mean the difference in life and death for you and your family if you are involved in an accident or are stranded.

3
Check news reports and weather conditions prior to traveling to your destination. If the National Weather Service or any other emergency outlet demands that there be no driving, heed to this warning and do not attempt to go anywhere.
-
4
Avoid driving in winter weather if you feel uncomfortable about the situation. Taking risks in winter weather conditions are simply not worth the consequences. Allow someone else to drive, or postpone the trip until the following day.
