Effects of Dysentery

Dysentery is any disorder that inflames the lining of the intestines, resulting in severe diarrhea, stomach pains and headaches. Symptoms can also include vomiting blood and shock. It can be caused by bacterial infection, chemical poisoning or virus. Though sometimes thought of as a Third World disease, dysentery is common worldwide.
  1. Dehydration

    • The diarrhea and vomiting from dysentery is the body ridding itself of the pathogen causing the infection. Severe dehydration is a very real danger since the body constantly loses fluids. If fluid loss is too great, fluids can be replaced intravenously.

    Lactose Intolerance

    • While suffering from dysentery, a person can become lactose intolerant. In the beginning stages of recovery, avoid dairy to accelerate the healing process. In severe cases, lactose intolerance can persist for years.

    Death

    • Though considered a mild affliction in more developed parts of the world, dysentery can be deadly in undeveloped nations. Lack of treatment and clean drinking water can lead to death from dehydration and malnourishment.
