How to Stay Safe in Dusty Work Places

All workplaces have to observe strict health and safety laws with regard to employees, with a major concern being dust. Dust can result from wood being cut, packaging and general debris and can lead to respiratory illnesses, eye or skin conditions. Although employers should deal with many of these issues, certain precautions should be taken by the employee.

      Check with the employer that adequate ventilation is installed. This will not eliminate dust, but will stop excess dust. As an employer, it is a legal requirement to ensure the workspace is well-ventilated under these conditions.

      Sweep up dust regularly. Piles of dust can be blown around by the wind causing increased risk to workers.

      Wear safety goggles at all times. Safety glasses are satisfactory, but for full protection, the eyes need to be protected from the sides as well.

      Cover the mouth and nose with a face mask. A basic face mask is adequate for most conditions and if a more complex system is required, such as a respirator, it should be supplied by the employer.

      Wear coveralls that cover arms and legs and wash them regularly. This will stop dust getting under the skin and prevent excess dust in the workplace. Disposable coveralls are just as effective and do not require cleaning. Gloves are also good for safety.
