How to Store Liquid Nitrogen

Liquid nitrogen is deadly. It can cause suffocation if vented in a closed space since it can vaporize, displacing oxygen. Liquid nitrogen also can condense air from the atmosphere, creating a higher oxygen content that increases the combustibility of materials. It will explode if improperly pressurized. It can also cause skin burns, frostbite and hypothermia. Storing it properly can save your life.

Instructions

    • 1

Store liquid nitrogen in dewars and pressurized vessels specifically designed to hold liquid nitrogen. A dewar is a double-walled flask that vents to the atmosphere. A pressurized vessel does not freely vent, but has relief valves.

    • 2

Store liquid nitrogen in areas with good ventilation. Use it in limited quantities in laboratories with limited ventilation. Use a low oxygen sensor to warn if the room where liquid nitrogen is stored has a lack of oxygen.

    • 3

Implement safety options in the transport of liquid nitrogen. Restrain a dewar in an open utility vehicle. Do not transport liquid nitrogen in an enclosed vehicle. Use a trolley and lifts to move containers between floors.

    • 4

Use controls in using, storing and transporting liquid nitrogen. Keep emergency equipment on hand such as a safety shower and an eye wash unit. Implement safe work procedures and train individuals using liquid nitrogen. Use personal protective equipment such as a full face shield, cryogenic gloves and an air supply breathing apparatus while using liquid nitrogen.
