Instructions

    • 1

Lay the ladder against a wall and slide the base of the ladder outward. The ladder should be at a 75 degree angle to the wall. Use two or more people depending on the size of the ladder.

    • 2

Secure the ladder in place depending on the type and size of the ladder. If using a collapsible ladder, make sure to pull the ladder outward as far as possible and lock down the hinges on the sides. If using an extension ladder, the bottom three rungs should overlap and the feet should be placed on a firm, even surface. With these ladders, use two ground spikes, sand bags, or other means to secure the ladder in place.

    • 3

Climb the ladder slowly, facing the ladder at all times. Be sure to wear solid shoes and center your body by keeping your hips within the rails of the ladder.

    • 4

Move toward the top of the ladder with caution. Almost all ladders have markings near the top of the ladder, generally near the fourth rung from the top, warning you not to proceed further due to safety. Stopping at these rungs is advisable. Even trained firefighters only utilize these final steps in cases of extreme emergency. If you should need to ascend to the very top of the ladder, do so with caution, using a rope or tether to anchor yourself to prevent injury or death should you fall.
