Human Load Carrying Techniques
When lifting heavy objects, it is important to use proper technique and posture. Improper technique while lifting or carrying large loads can result in injury or strain, especially to the back. To avoid back injury, there are a few basic techniques that can be used to help lift, carry and place loads more easily and safely.-
Preparation and Stance
-
Examine the task at hand. If the load is too large or unwieldy for a single person, ask someone to help. Look for possible handholds or grips on the object to be carried. Also check that there are no obstacles between the load and it's intended destination. Stand next to the load in a balanced position with your feet shoulder width apart. One foot should be behind the object and one should be next to it.
Lifting Technique
-
Bend at the knees, keeping your back straight but not vertical. Grip the object with your palms and fingers wherever possible. A palm grip is much more secure. Tuck your chin in to keep your back straight, and lift by pushing yourself upward with your legs. Keep your arms and elbows tucked in while lifting.
Carrying Technique
-
Carry the load close to your body, keeping your elbows and arms tucked in next to your body. Don't twist your body or rotate your hips while carrying the object. To change direction, shift your foot position and turn your whole body. Make sure to watch where you are going.
Lowering Technique
-
Bend at the knees to set the object down. Tuck in your chin to keep your back straight. If you are placing the object on a shelf or ledge, place it on the edge first, and then push it into position. Be sure to keep your hands and feet clear so that you don't crush them while setting the load down.
